More of the Bar-the Corbels

This is a progress report from my big summer project, building an outdoor kitchen for my husband.  Not only do I want it to be functional for Mike, but I also want  to include as many curb found items as I possibly can.  This is helping me clear out some of my inventory.

Anyone remember the great dining room table I found at the curb on my birthday?

Well, it was still in my garage when I was looking for building materials for my Outdoor Kitchen project…

Recognize these pieces now?

Don’t hate me, I cut up the table legs!

Remember, it’s all about finding different purposes for the junk I have now, right?

(that’s me trying to convince myself it’s ok to cut up beautiful things like ladders, old doors, and now vintage tables…)

 

Just had to take the base apart.

Cut up the pieces to get ready for mounting on some more of that great wood I rescued from my sister’s dumpster.

It took me forever to figure out how to support the big spindles..

Then mounted them under the bar top.

That thing is really sturdy now!

This one was stained to match the bar top before I put it on.

The rest I had to do in place.

Backwards, I know.

Gotta go now, it’s trash day somewhere…

Outdoor Kitchen progress…The Bar

I really wanted to get my kitchen project done by today.  I go back to work this morning and still have lots of project to finish. 

Darn!

I feel like a failure.

But.

I’m trying to shake that off.

Cause really, I got a lot done,  but it just did not come easy.

My brain is fried!

This figuring out as I go deal is really tough.

But!

I’m happy with what I DID get done.

Really, it’s the most important part in my book.

The Bar!

Who needs a kitchen when you can have a bar, right?

Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Remember the big plans I had at the beginning of the week?

I was off to a decent start… then things slowed right down.

I blogged Saturday about all these doors I had in my garage.  (It took me a half day just to get to them!)

Well, they’re not there anymore.

 

I selected the ones that would work and got to cutting them in half.

To use as the exterior siding for my framing. 

Safety note here…do NOT prop doors up against framing to take blog pictures on a windy day!  One blew over and hit my ankle when I was turned around. 

Let’s just say I saw stars…..

Then my countertop plans fell through and that really set me back.  What on earth would I use?

But I got thinking….and looking around my garage….

And decided, why not more doors?

At least for the bar area. 

I have some ceramic tile to use on the cook counter.

Let me tell you they were pretty tricky to work with.

I had to get creative with holding them together so I could get the fit right for gluing.

Some temporary brackets to hold it up while positioning everything…..

Once they were all joined together it was time to trim it out.

I used some thick pine bed sides and ripped 1 inch strips on the table saw.  The pine was just the right width to fit the door edges.

See that little 3 inch strip of door where the clamp is holding it together?  I was just short on my counter cuts when I was doing the final assembly.  So I had to fit in a filler strip to make it work.

Don’t look at my miter cuts too closely.  

One-step stain and polyurethane covered all the different tones to make them look better together.  Now the poly is not an exterior finish, so we will have to be careful and cover the bar when not in use.  And I have to go back and add a couple more coats too.

I tried marine spar finish on one door, but it was not compatible with the existing finish. (it’s still tacky!)

And I was not about to stop and strip all those pieces to bare wood.

And I finally got the tops of the barstools done at the same time.

I used exterior stain I had picked up from the oops section at Home Depot for $5 to protect all the bare wood framing.

I don’t plan to cover all the inside framing, that will stay exposed with plywood shelves across.  (I went ahead and stained the plywood too)

Can you tell what these are?  (Hint, they go with the bar.) 

I’d show you the finished picture, but it started raining yesterday before I could get me act together and get some more current photos.

 

And this morning it’s pouring rain still.

So that will have to do for now.  I’ll take some pictures of the  bar tonight when I get home from work.

If it ever stops raining!

I Love Doors

 

This post  is especially  made to link to  Donna’s Saturday night special party for doors.

You all know I love ladders a whole bunch, but if there’s one thing I love more, it’s old doors…..

I just LOVE old doors.

Mike says I’ve never met a door on the curb that I didn’t take home with me. 

Usually he exaggerates a lot.

You know what? 

This time he’s right!

Why, sometimes I even get lucky and get one with the knobs still on.

And if I’m really lucky, they’ll have glass knobs.

This time I think the door-gods were smiling down on me.  I mean really, 4 doors with glass knobs all on the same day?

Oh yes, baby, and all at the same curb.

 

These 2 were stored in my son’s garage over the winter.

Why, I have so many doors I had to make a special corral for them in the back of the garage.  Some 2x4’s attached to the wall studs hold several doors upright and makes it easier to get them out.

See?

 

This very weathered white door was helped along by leaving it at my Mom’s house for 2 summers (I meant to come back to get it sooner Mom, really I did!)

 

Cabinet doors count too!

So what does one DO with so many doors?  Besides store hide

them at every known relatives house?

The possibilities are endless.

This arbor is the entry to my “Rainbow Garden” built  in memory of our dog, Justice.  If you look closely where the chain link fence meets the picket fence you will see a black wooden silhouette of a German Shepherd standing sentry by the corner of the yard.   You can read more about this memorial garden here.

This cabinet door had the best red painted hardware still attached to it when I found it.

I made a base for it to make it into a coffee table for one of my daughter’s friends.

My first try at a potting bench.

Sometimes just leaning up against the fence in the garden is good.

Or add a little trim around the edges and you have a great headboard.

Of course, leaving the glass knob on just makes it that much better.

 

This dining room table was made from some curb found table legs, some crown molding, and a door that came off another room in the house. 

I wouldn’t let my son throw the door away.  So it became the dining table at his house.

This picture shows it before the glass top was installed.
