It started out so innocently.
Earlier this year I made a list of major items I wanted to buy for the house this year.
A new washer and dryer were on that list.
Now mind you, when I made the list, the washer and dryer were working ok, just not very efficiently.
But lately they have been a pain in the neck, I’m having to re-spin and/or re-dry almost every load. The basic fixes weren’t working anymore and the pair is at least 16 years old if not more. (They were included in a previous home purchase.)
So I took the plunge last week and ordered a new Maytag front load washer and dryer.
Aren’t they pretty?
There was a nice sale, a nice rebate, and another state rebate for recycling the old washer.
Oh, and Home Depot had the 12 month interest free deal.
Everything just fell into place.
So they will be delivered on Saturday.
This is where the yikes comes in.
Cleaning up the basement was suddenly at the very top of my to-do list.
So I went down into the dungeon Saturday and started clearing up some of the cobwebs and clutter.
It’s amazing how big the laundry area really is when you de-junk it!
Sigh. Ok, that's done. Now they have room to deliver the new and take out the old.
So then I get to looking at the walls and really seeing them for the first time in the 9 years since we moved in.
Bad.
Very Bad.
U G L Y Bad.
My new washer and dryer deserve so much better than this!
So out comes the paint and I get to work on
that cinder block wall behind the washer and dryer.
It’s over 70 years old and never been painted.
Go figure. How on earth did I get into this?
Of course, then I decide we need to replace the dryer vent with a rigid one, and the water hoses to the washer with the braided steel type. And while we’re at it, we need a new vent for the outside of the house. The old one is cracked.
And maybe, just maybe, the old fashioned kitchen sink will finally get hooked up.
Oh Honey, can you do that while I paint?……
Poor Mike.
He really was not into this.
Now I’m thinking that the plain concrete floor
needs to be painted.
And……. I need a countertop to go on top of the new machines when they get here.
And……. I need to paint or re-configure the very rustic 2 x 4 shelving down there.
Eek!
I only wanted a new washer and dryer….

Oh my gosh! that new paint looks awesome! I didn't expect such an improvement. awww shucks! are you going to shame me into working on my basement?
ReplyDeleteway to go girl! Your hard work is really showing!
gail
ps maybe I'll wait till I get new applicances, NEVER!
Wow the paint made a huge difference. Love those new machines. Funny how one thing leads to another.
ReplyDeleteLooking better already! Why don't you just get a big bright and cheery rug for in front of that pretty washer and dryer? That way you won't have to paint the floor. At least not right away! Plus it will be comfy to stand on.
ReplyDeleteWow, even my front loader didn't get the treatment you new stuff will get. BTW you should get new hoses with your washer so wait before you buy new ones. Gee you did such a great job, maybe when Deb picks you up to come to my house I will have you work on the basement, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous of the washer and dryer and if you get all that done in the laundry room, I'll be jealous of that too!
ReplyDeleteNice job! Now you just need to pick out names for your machines! :)
ReplyDeleteOr am I the only weird one that does this?
Its funny how the ball rolls....dont worry Im sure we can all relate, I know I do! My hubby is scared when I want to change something, he knows it ends up being 10 things!
ReplyDeleteLove the new machines, and I think a rug may do it for a while, lol.
Congrats on the new front loader. I love mine with all the features. The paint on the walls already makes it look brighter in the laundry room. Now about that floor, it will go really fast using a long handle on a roller.
ReplyDeleteBut Mike.....look how good it looks already!! HA! Great job =)
ReplyDeleteHaha...you are too cute. Love that set!
ReplyDeleteYou did go with the fancy schmancy W & D! Good for you. After 16 years, they are very well deserved. I love the difference a coat of paint made. I also have a dungeon/W&D in basement. :( If I could stand to be down there long enough, I'd repaint mine. I'm feeling inspired now...but I fear that I'll need a new W & D, hose, shelving, etc. to go with it! lol
ReplyDeleteHow did I miss this post... good for you... Mike should be thrilled you got the basement cleaned up... wow painting really brightened things up down there... you are going to love your washer and dryer... I love my washer... it is a whole new experience, you will never go back to a top loader again. Can't wait to see what else you decide to do down there... looking good.
ReplyDeleteIt better be good, Denise is really watching... oh did I forget to tell you we were going to visit her next summer... just thought I would mention it...ahahahaha
Hugs, Deb
we are picking you up along the way... lol
ReplyDeleteThe paint looks great. and I bet you love your new machines. Who knows maybe the laundry will do it's self it will be so happy there.
