I’ve recently become obsessed with stripes. Horizontal stripes to be exact. It all started with a bookmark Jan at Bobbypins Boardwalk featured in her August bookmarks series.
I fell in love with this look! (Click on the picture for the link to the awesome tutorial Jackie made for painting stripes.)
Then on the Houzz website they did an ideabook about horizontal stripes too.
Love those stripes!
I just had to try it out somewhere for myself.
So, now to find a wall I could work on…hmmmm.
Why not the garage wall in the outdoor kitchen? I wouldn't even have to tape it off since it’s clapboard siding. Definitely the lazy person’s way to go. (that would be me, always looking for a shortcut)
So I had this idea in my head of how it would look, and wanted to incorporate the color scheme of the kitchen.
Well, it didn’t come out quite the way I had pictured it in my head.
This was my test patch. Can you tell I just painted around the stuff that was on the wall at the time? ;)
First of all, the black was too stark against the white.
Then I tried to widen the dark stripe to 2 clapboards together, but it was just too much.
I re-painted a couple times and finally settled on Mystic Grey for the dark stripe. Of course my choices were limited to whatever exterior paint colors were in my stash of oops paint.
I’ve decided to live with it a while to see if it grows on me.
And no, I did not take that fountain down to paint under it. Yet.
Or the lights that already had white paint on them from Mike painting the garage last summer. Yet.
And the TV window frame still needs to be painted to match.
Here’s a before shot, taken the 4th of July;
And this one was taken on Sunday.
Football, anyone?
I dunno, maybe if I blur it a little bit more it will be ok.
What do you think? Are stripes on an outside wall a totally “off the wall” idea?
I’m even considering taking the stripe around the corner to the breezeway. Think that’s too much?
I’m just getting lots of eye rolling from Mike.

I like it! I love the colors together, but wondering if two boards really would be too much? hmmm
ReplyDeletefootball? Please tell mike I'm sorry for his loss on sunday night. I always pull for little brother (unless he's playing against big brother)

I'm with Gail. I think a stripe two boards wide would be too much. I like it the way it is. Not sure about going around the corner though.
ReplyDeleteI think I would live with it for a while and then decide if you want to go around the corner.
ReplyDeleteI would have been way to chicken to stripe my siding...but this turned out fabulous! I do like the lighter gray, rather than the black. Before your things leaning/hanging on the wall were cute, but seemed to be floating in a sea of white. This just frames them and really anchors them. Great job! And yes, I think I'd carry it around to the breezeway as long as it doesn't clash with anything on that side.
ReplyDeleteI love it... it adds a bit of contrast to the white. I say keep going around the corner and get rid of the green in that corner. I will bring my paint brush, I know you won't let me sit too long anyway...lol.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Deb
I like it just as it is. Pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteI like it! Maybe because I am itching to paint something gray. I like the dark gray better then the black. Live with it for awhile and then go around the corner if you love it.
ReplyDeleteLoving your yard...I ove the view of the teli and GO GIANTS!!!! My husband and I have never even been to New York we have been married 19 years together 25 and he has always been a DIE HARD GIANTS FAN... my dream is to get there someday. I hope you have a great week.
ReplyDeleteSmiles and Blessings,
Sheila
thank you so much for featuring my stripe tutorial :)
ReplyDeleteI like it so I say go for it. I would even like to see more stripes. I like both the black and the gray. I would never have been brave enough to try this but I think it turned out great!
ReplyDeleteI like dark grey and on one board. I can picture Mike rolling those eyes even though I have never seen him! hugs♥olive
ReplyDeleteI like it the way it is. I prob would not go around the corner though. Can't wait to see the outdoor kitchen when you get it all done. LOVE the TV out there too!
ReplyDeleteAs I mentioned in my email, Rose, I admire your ability to surround yourself with things you love. You've created your own "world" in your yard and home. This is your stage, so set it up just how you like it!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any advice. I am partial to color. I do give you a lot of credit for jumping in to the project with both feet. I too take shortcuts usually they are bumpy but, I get where I am going in the end with a good story.
ReplyDeletethanks for linking up to my party and linking back to me! :)
ReplyDeletehave a great weekend with our friend Deb!
